Indeed, “caravanning” is the most comfortable way to spend a vacation. Many families have been seeing the potential of caravans in providing a safer (no more seeking for hotels) and a more “private” holiday. But, as this kind of craze became popular, it brought with it a black industry – caravan theft.
In UK, The Association of Chief Police Officers estimates that there are more or less 1,600 traveling caravans stolen each year. It is also important to note that this figure is nearly the quarter of all new caravans sold annually.
The result of this saddening news is the establishment of stricter caravan insurance policies. Caravan insurance companies require additional security features to be purchased by both old and potential owners. Aside from this, the National Caravan Council established the Caravan Registration and Identification Scheme (CRIS) to prevent and detect caravan crimes and acts easier. CRIS requires all owners to register their caravans (those manufactured since 1992). It will be recorded on the database by a unique 17 digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). As of today, CRIS registration has somehow helped lessen caravan theft.
There's no need to stop “caravanning” just because of the caravan theft scare. Authorities have been establishing ways to solve the problem. Just follow their advice and your caravan vacation will be safe.
